Pilgrims Way to Santiago

Sarria to Santiago de Compostela. The last 100 km of the Camino.

One hundred are the essential kilometers for the pilgrim to get the desired « Compostela ». In this way, Sarria is for many pilgrims the starting point of the Camino de Santiago, since it is at the limit of those one hundred kilometers.

The route from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela is part of the traditional route of the French Way, which begins in Roncesvalles. It is also the busiest at the moment. There are two possible variables to do the Camino de Santiago from Sarria. On a seven-day tour, with a single stage from Palas de Rei to Arzúa, or dividing this stage and adding an extra night with a stop in Melide. This one hundred kilometer route from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela is the shortest and most direct.

The section from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela does not offer great difficulties for pilgrims, although we must bear in mind that not every day (nor many continuous days) we walk an average of twenty kilometers. For this reason, it is advisable to habituate our legs and feet a few days before starting the pilgrimage with small training. Good footwear is also essential. He will be our best friend during the Camino and our feet will thank us when we get to Compostela.

The route from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela runs through pleasant and lush forests that will offer us grateful shelter from the sun in summer, and goes through towns that, just as it happens along the route from Roncesvalles, were born and grew up around the Jacobean tradition , like the town of Sarria itself, our starting point. Although the pilgrim’s menu is often frugal at noon, we must not forget that we are in Galicia, an area of ​​rich gastronomy, so it is advisable to pay homage along the way, such as a good Denomination of Origin cheese Arzúa-Ulloa, typical of the places we will cross.

What to take with you
  • A reasonably sized backpack (in principle, a capacity of 40 liters which is a big maximum).
  • Good walking shoes (already worn for several tens of kilometers).
  • Clothing made of synthetic fibers for hiking (for weight and drying).

Expect to walk 5 to 6 hours a day, between 12 and 20 km.

You will have the option of sleeping in a dormitory, inn or hotel; always keep in mind that it is possible to make the camino of Santiago de Compostela a pleasure and without suffering.

Itinerary

Day 1Sarria

Arrival at the accommodation on behalf of the client (check transfer service).Sarria is for many the starting point, because it is very close to the mythical andlast 100 km, which is the minimum distance to travel to get the Compostela. That is why this medieval town is one of the towns with more movement, and that does not disappoint the experts or the most recent pilgrims. It is a day to rest, acclimatize and mentalize for the adventure that will begin the next day.

Day 2Sarria – Portomarin (22,2 km. +/- 5 hours)

Difficulty: Low
This first stage is smooth, without much unevenness and a comfortable ride.We enter the deepest Galicia, and we get caught up in the beauty of its chestnut trees, oaks, rivers, meadows … besides passing through charming villages like Barbadelos or Ferreiros. The old town of Portomarin is located under the waters of the Belesar reservoir. The Miño River indicates that we are arriving. Accommodation in Portomarin.

Day 3Portomarin – Palas de Rei (24,8 km +/- 6 hours)

Difficulty: Low
We begin the route ascending towards the Serra de Ligonde where we climb up to 725 meters. On this day, the green landscapes will be mixed with some asphalted areas and we begin to see the famous “cruises”. The villages of Castromaior, Ventas de Narón and Ligonde stand out. Accommodation in Palas de Rei.

Day 4Palas de Rei - Arzua (28,5 km +/- 7 hours)

Difficulty: Medium
We enter the province of A Coruña. We leave Palas through Campo dos Romeiros, a traditional pilgrim meeting place, to enter lush eucalyptus forests and medieval bridges through beautiful villages such as Furelos, Boente and Castañeda. This stage is harder due to the distance, so it is advisable to make a stop in Melide and take the opportunity to eat the famous “octopus a feira”, tofinally reach Arzua, famous cheese town. Day 5Arzua – O Pedrouzo/Amenal (19,3 km /22,6 km +/- 5 hours)

Difficulty: Low
Stage brief and quiet to assimilate everything lived during the road before arriving the next day to Santiago. Accommodation in Amenal / O Pedrouzo.

Day 6O Pedrouzo/Amenal – Santiago de Compostela (19,4 km/16,1 km +/- 4 horas)

Difficulty: Low
Strange sensations. It is the last stage. We recommend leaving early to attend the pilgrim’s mass that is celebrated at 12:00 hours. First we arrive at Lavacolla and continue to climb Monte do Gozo, where we can see, from afar, the first glimpse of the coveted Cathedral. Finally, Plaza del Obradoiro and the deserved personal satisfaction of having come here. Accommodation: Santiago.
