On this holiday, you experience everything from sand dunes and steep coastlines, where you can hear the waves break on the rocks, to meadows, rift valleys and flat sandy beaches. Here are fields of heather and forests. The whole spectrum of nature is represented on this small island. The package is built around two accommodations; one in the North and one in the South, which allows you to select the trips you want without having to walk from place to place along the coast every day. Some tours are best suited to start by bus first, and hop on and off, as you wish, so you can choose the walks you wish to experience.
Rønne(Google Map)
3 Hours Before Flight Time
Bornholm’s nature is diverse, unique and extremely suited to walking. West Bornholm has steep cliffsides and a dramatic rocky landscape, whilst the Eastern part is somewhat flatter and has a more gentle rocky coastline. South Bornholm is known for its meadows and large white sandy beaches. In the middle of the island you will find Almindingen – Denmark’s third largest forest, covering an area of 6000 ha.
The hiking trip can be based from a fixed location or you can travel on foot between different accommodations.
If you choose a fixed base, then we can offer you bus tickets with unlimited travel on Bornholm. It is nice to take the bus home to your hotel, if your legs are tired after a long day on the road.
On arrival in Rønne you travel North along the West coast of Bornholm through the woods to Hasle (10km). Perhaps enjoy a lunchbreak at the museum smokehouse. Then continue along the coast through the small fishing villages of Helligpeder and Teglkås to Jons Chapel and impressive surrounding scenery. Then you can head inland towards Allinge, where you check in at the cosy Hotel Allinge, where you spend the first 3 nights.
Here you will find Hammerknuden with, among other things, Hammershus nearby with many possibilities for walks and much to explore. Take the bus to Almindingen, where there are enough walks to last for several days. Lilleborg and the Rocking Stone can be found here. Start and end this hike at Christianshøjkroen in Almindingen, where you may wish to enjoy lunch in the beautiful surroundings of the woods that change colours depending on the season.
Follow the yellow marks trail. This hike takes place on good forest roads. Experience the Ekkodalen (Echo Valley) – Bornholm’s largest rift valley with impressive and steep rock walls. The best echo can be found by following left on the marked path and stopping at H.C. Ørsted’s spring. You may shout as many times as you want.
If you follow the path further in the same direction, you come through the Ekkodalen, which used to be called Styrtebakkerne (Falling Hills), perhaps because ancient tribes used to sacrifice people by dropping them from the top of the rock. Also, visit Gammelborg (Old Fortress). The tour begins at the 14 km marker stone between Svaneke and Rønne.
The trip South along the east coast is a very beautiful trip. Perhaps pick the stretches you want to walk and hop on and off the bus to suit. You will pass the Helligdomsklipperne (Sanctuary Cliffs) with the art museum, and Salene Bay just before Gudhjem, which is definitely worth a visit. Just outside Gudhjem you will find the Agricultural Museum Melstedgård and Madkulturhuset (Food Culture House). Further along are Bølshavn, Listed and Svaneke as well as Årsdale. From here there is a 3 km hiking trail to Nexø with good possibilities of seeing seals. From Nexø, you can walk all the way down the shoreline/beach most of the way to Snogebæk. You have accomodation the last three days in Snogebæk, a small cosy fishing village on the east coast of South Bornholm.
From your base in Snogebæk, you can for example explore Dueodde. A hike through the great dune landscape at Dueodde is a very special nature experience. Visit Dueodde and feel the fine sand under your feet whilst walking in the massive sand dunes, get windswept on the wide sandy beach, find shelter between the pines behind the dunes or take the 196 steps up to the 45 meter high Dueodde Lighthouse (Northern Europe’s tallest) and look over the sea and a large part of Bornholm. In Dueodde’s pine forest you can also find one of the old wartime bunkers. The Germans had plans for four canon positions, two of which were completed. Take a hike to and then through the Paradise Hills, a forest with marked trails. The Rocking Stone and Bornholm’s first youth hostel, « Fjällstauan » from 1925 on the red route.
On this last hiking day you head to Rønne, a 30 – 44 km walk. Take the South coast road and experience Dueodde and Slusegård, an old watermill that is absolutely stunning, and at the beach you can stand on the stone where 15 degrees longtitude and 55 degrees latitude meet. You walk along the beach and dunes past small fishing communities at Boderne and Arnager (at both places you can buy breakfast during the summer period).
