Walking holidays in Austria: The defining feature of the Salzkammergut has always been the visual drama
between the countless small and large lakes nestling in the abruptly rising
mountains of the Northern Alps. The newly established long distance trail links these hotspots in a never seen before, comprehensive way.

On 20 stages or 348km, plus several regional circuits, a new walking experience takes form. Discover this walking holidays in Austria  walking through lush Alpine meadows, fairy-tale forests and invigorating waters in a cultural landscape of outstanding authenticity.

Note to the hikers

  • LUGGAGE: a backpack (40 l minimum) and hand luggage for the plane a travel bag or a large backpack for the rest of your luggage
  • CLOTHES: To be adapted according to the season: a pair of shoes suitable for walking a pair of sneakers for travel and comfort at the stage or barefoot a Goretex windbreaker a sweater and a fleece shorts a swimsuit long pants in light canvas wool socks (not too thick) Spare T-shirts and Underwear hat rain cape
  • THE MATERIAL TO BRING ; towel sunglasses sunscreen at least one liter aluminum flask or Camel-Back type water bag flashlight or headlamp + spare battery 1 pocket knife your camera don't forget your identity card
  • Notes on staying at an Alpine lodge: • You must bring your own sleeping bag and pillow case - a hut sleeping bag does not provide sufficient warmth. Blankets and pillowcases are NOT available in the cabins due to Covid19; • Bring your own mouth/nose mask • On most huts, card payment is not possible. Take enough cash with you for food and drinks. • Dogs on request; not allowed in the sleeping areas. Attended stay in the winter room possible, partly dog kennels available, extra costs to be paid on spot. In Austria there is a general linen and muzzle requirement!
What to Expect

The Salzkammergut is rich in culture and nature – and loved for its scenic diversity, which leads the hiker from comfortable to exhausting tracks. Hiking in the Salzkammergut is hiking straight out of a picture book. The region is rich in breathtaking panoramas, majestic mountains, clear fresh air, crystal blue lakes, alpine pastures and lush green pastures. Cows, sheep and horses graze in the pastures and look forward to your visit. Walk over the endless high pastures, reflect on the lonely hiking trails and refresh yourself in the rushing mountain streams before you stop in one of the well-managed alpine huts to reward you with one of the culinary highlights the Salzkammergut offers.

Itinerary

Day 1Individual arrival in Bad Goisern.

You will receive your travel documents at your accommodation
Overnight stay in Bad Goisern

Day 2Bad Goisern – Goiserhütte, ~ 10 km, 4-5 hrs, difference in altitude + 1204 m / - 126 m

Ascent via Obermuth to the Goiserer lodge below the summit of Mount Kalmberg. Not far
from the lodge lies the “Kalmoos church”, a cave in which Protestants attended hidden
services during the time of counter reformation. In addition, its recommended to climb the
summit of Mount Kalmberg.
Overnight stay at Goiserer lodge.
Luggage transfer from Bad Goisern to Gosau where you spend the following night (overnight
backpack and sleeping bag for the night at the lodge have to be carried by yourself!)

Day 3Goisererhütte – Gosau~ 22 km, 7-8 hrs, difference in altitude + 950 m / - 1771 m

Descent via Iglmoosalm to Gosau. From here you have several options. The S-Trail leads
via Zwieselam and Lake Gosausee through the whole Gosau valley.
Overnight stay in Gosau.

Day 4 Gosau – Hallstatt ~ 16,5 km, 6-7 hrs, difference in altitude + 1020 m - 1254 m

One of the major highlights in the Gosau valley is the ascent to
the Löckenmoos high moor. After taking in the unique
atmosphere of the Alpine moor, continue to Leutgeb hut and stop
for a traditional walker’s lunch with homemade products. Follow
the trail along the flanks of Mount Plassen to reach the famous
Hallstatt salt mines and the panorama platform “Welterbeblick”
Overnight stay in Hallstatt.

Day 5Hallstatt – Bad Goisern ~11 km, 3 hrs, difference in altitude + 131 m / - 156 m

Take some time to explore the UNESCO World Heritage village Hallstatt before making your
way to the trail. Today’s walk will be short but sweet. Once you are ready take the ferry
across the lake to the eastern shore and follow the picturesque lakeside trail to Bad Goisern.
