Hiking Holiday Czech Republic

The main Krkonoše ridge stretches almost 40 km from west to east. We explore the most attractive part of the mountains from Sněžka all the way to the Labe spring. On the first day, we visit Luční bouda – the oldest, largest and also the highest-situated mountain chalet in the Krkonoše. We’ll be sampling home cooking and the local beer, Paroháč, at the microbrewery.

On the second day of our hiking holiday Czech Republic , we go along the Czech-Polish border. We can look forward to captivating views of the Polish parts of the Krkonoše at Velký, Malý Stav and a glacial lake.
We arrive at Martinova bouda in the late afternoon. We’ll use the convenient location of this chalet for spending the night as it is barely 4 km from here to the Labe spring. Our three-day trek ends with a descent to Špindlerův Mlýn

Itinerary

Day 1Prague - Giant Mountains

Early pick-up, transfer to Pec pod Sněžkou, meeting with the guide, by lift to Sněžka (1603 m), trek along Poland border to Luční bouda (3 km), brewery excursion, overnight.

Pec pod Sněžkou lies 750 m above sea level. It was founded at the location of a miner’s settlement at the end of the 16th century. Thanks to forest harvesting, the settlers established meadow enclaves here, they built dwellings and bred cattle. Later, in the second half of last century, chalets, pensions and hotels emerged – a new livelihood for the inhabitants after the slump of ore extraction. Pec lies at the heart of the Krkonoše, surrounded by the highest peaks of the Krkonoše.

We end up our short town sightseeing at the new cabin cableway opened in 2012. Riding in two stretches, we overcome almost 700 altitudinal metres, and in doing so we’ll be among the first visitors to reach the summit of Sněžka (the name originates from the 19th century and means “covered by snow”). We’ll take a look at the 14 m high rotunda – the Chapel of St. Laurence and have a wonderful cup of coffee at the new Česká Poštovna. The captivating Krkonoše panorama can be viewed from the freely accessible sightseeing terrace.

Following red and blue marked paths  we continue our walk along Poland border through Úpa peat-bog to Luční bouda (1410 m),  the oldest and biggest mountain chalet in the Krkonoše. We’ll be spending the first night on the Krkonoše ridges here. The hotel has its own bakery and microbrewery. We make the time before supper more pleasant at the brewery cellars. The tour includes tasting the local beer“Paroháč”directly from the tanks. A delicious three-course dinner includes fresh rainbow trout.

Day 2Giant Mountains area

A whole-day ridge tour along the Czech-Polish border. Lunchbreak at Špindlerovka hotel, trek Špindlerovka – ruins of Petrova bouda – Martinova bouda (6 km)

From Luční bouda, we set out over the hillside of Stříbrný hřbet by the red sign in the direction of Malý Šišák. After a mere 2 km, we are greeted by a lovely view of the Wielki and Maly Staw glacial lakes which open before us. Wielki is the biggest glacial lake in the Krkonoše, spanning over 600 m and reaching a depth of 24.4 m.
We approach a prominent granite cluster – Slonecznik. According to a legend, the ruler of these mountains wanted to build a palace here, but didn’t manage to do so in the end. The stones have remained here somehow.

After lunch, we continue along the red sign – the path of Czech-Polish friendship, to the ruins of Petrova bouda. From here, a wonderful view from the south to the east in the direction towards Malý Šišák, Luční Hora and the Kozí hřběty unfolds before us. By the border path we continue towards Dívčí kameny – granite ledges as high as eight metres which provide spectacular round views. Legend has it that a young shepherdess died here. We continue along the stony path to Mužské kameny and Martinova bouda – a mountain hotel where we’ll be spending the night.

Day 3Giant Mountains area-Prague

Half-day excursion from Martinova bouda to the Labe springs, descend to Špindleruv Mlýn (11-14 km)

In the morning, we set out over the Vysoké kolo mountains to the symbolic start of the Labe River. There is an installation there in the form of a curb with a water inlet and outlet and benches. Illustrated on the rock face are signs of 26 significant places through which the Labe flows on its way to the sea. From there we have several possibilities of descent to Špindlerův Mlýn. A longer, almost 11 km-long way leads through the Labe valley around several waterfalls. The Pančava waterfall is the highest in the Krkonoše (148 m) and is certainly worth seeing. The shorter (9 km) and less demanding variant is a descent over the Labe meadow, the Hanč and Vrbata burial mound and Horní Mísečky (ski resort) to Špindlerův Mlýn.Transfer back to Prague in the late afternon
